As a leading steel manufacturer, Ovako takes responsibility for conducting its business in a sustainable manner from all aspects, encompassing everything from quality and customer relations to employees, safety and the environment. It also means acting responsibly in the communities where we operate. Sustainability is an important component of Ovako’s long-term strategy, and these issues are set out in the company’s policies on the environment, health, energy and industrial safety, as well as in the company’s code of conduct and core values.
Scrap-based steel production
Steel is an important construction material, found throughout society, and can be reused any number of times. All of Ovako’s steel production is based on scrap that is then processed into high-quality steel products, making Ovako one of the largest Nordic recyclers of steel scrap. Scrap-based manufacturing generates lower carbon dioxide emissions than steel production using iron ore. Through effective scrap management, we also preserve the alloying substances contained in the scrap, thus reducing the need to add additional alloy, which leads to both economic and environmental gains. Ovako recycles around 800,000 metric tons of scrap each year.
Ovako’s units are certified in safety, health, the environment and energy. Ovako’s units are certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 international Environment Management System.
Markets for residual products
In addition to its main product, steel, Ovako’s manufacturing generates a large variety of residual products. These products are largely reused or recycled, and we even recycle any scrap generated during our manufacturing. Ovako is involved in a number of research projects aimed at increasing and improving the use of residuals.
Ovako collaborates on sustainability
Ovako works actively with its customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to reduce the overall environmental impact of its products, throughout their lifecycle. It also partners with trade organizations like Jernkontoret to achieve the industry’s shared vision of a sustainable steel industry in the long term.
