As a leading producer of high-performance engineering steel with a long track record in supporting the forging industry, Ovako has the products, capabilities and services to meet the demands of today and tomorrow.

We work closely with forging companies to establish a well-functioning supply chain for high performing end products. Our aim is to be the strongest possible supply chain partner, with the ability to supply many different types of steel grades, based on three different metallurgical routes.

We can meet most customer specifications, using ingot- or continuous-cast routes (bloom and billet sizes are both available) for competitive pricing at any performance level. Following earlier investments in bar peeling and heat treatment processes, since the end of 2019 we are now also able to supply vacuum degassed steel from the Smedjebacken billet casting route.

Our steel can be supplied in a heat treated condition to create a multitude of microstructures. We can supply precision-rolled surface finishes or bright bar with many levels of surface tolerances from machining or grinding. Our state-of-the-art non-destructive testing ensures the highest product quality. We also offer various options for tailored logistics concepts and commercial systems integration.

Thanks to a closely controlled production chain from initial melt to final delivery, our products are known for their highly stable material quality with narrow process parameters. As a result, our products enable forging companies to benefit from highly stable forming processes, repeatable hardenability and improved machinability. Furthermore, Ovako steel has a CO2 footprint that is around 80% lower than the market average.

Build on the strength of the world’s largest engineering steel group

In 2018, Ovako became part of the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the third-largest steel producer. Our collaboration further strengthens our global offering, providing the opportunity for Ovako to invest in long-term partnerships with forging customers.

Cleaner, stronger steel

Ovako has invested in a new vacuum degassing facility for our Smedjebacken plant. Besides reducing our carbon footprint and energy consumption, the new facility allows us to improve steel properties to create new business opportunities for forging customers in advanced sectors such as the automotive industry.

Cut CO2 footprint by up to 80%

All our products are manufactured with recycled steel and a Nordic energy mix with an extremely low CO2 foot-print. This means our products are world-leading in their low cradle-to-gate carbon footprint – up to 80% lower than the global average for hot-rolled steel products. You can pass this benefit on to your own customers every time you use Ovako steel. Together we can build a better steel cycle.

Take the Steel Navigator shortcut to the optimal steel

Ovako’s Steel Navigator means that finding the right steel has never been easier. You can search by material properties, applications or end products. Compare our steels with standard steels and calculate machine settings to save time and increase tool life. Our digital Heat Treatment guide even helps you save time and money by predicting how a specific steel grade composition will perform after heat treatment. Whatever your process or application, our web-based steel selection tools let you explore hundreds of high-quality steel products to find the right match for your specific needs.

We made it! But we are still not satisfied

What a journey! It took years of hard work to make our steelmaking operations more sustainable. In 2022, we went carbon neutral in all operations. But we´re still not satisfied - our journey towards steel production without CO2 emissions continues.
